A bodyguard's main responsibility is to protect their client. A bodyguard's role is to keep their client out of harm's way even if it means putting their body and life on the line. Bodyguards, or private security, can work for anyone at any time including politicians, celebrities, or they can be hired to protect a local business. Usually, in the case of a public figure, multiple bodyguards are hired. The President of the United States usually will have bodyguards that are visible and extra bodyguards that blend in with a crowd in case someone tries to do something to harm him.
Many times a bodyguard can serve the role of driver and are there to make sure their client gets to the place they need to be. Often times, bodyguards are assigned by reputable agencies. It is best to look for an agency that has experience and hires competent, experienced, and disciplined bodyguards. The one common mistake people make when looking for a bodyguard is looking for someone who is muscular and very tall. While that is one good criteria to look for it is also important to find someone that has a military or police background so you know he can defend himself and defend you in the event an altercation occurs.
The role of a bodyguard is not easy. Security service companies must ensure that their bodyguards are alert and know what is going on around them at all times. In addition to watching over their client, they need to check out the premises, doors, balconies, and suspicious vehicles. For a bodyguard, his role is to deter and diffuse a situation before it happens. The last thing that a bodyguard wants is to have to get physically involved with someone because once that happens then their client is not 100 percent protected.
Bodyguards that are hired by celebrities are often referred as VIP protection bodyguards. The term is also used for bodyguards that work at special events, large parties, or nightclubs. In the case of celebrities, a bodyguard can end up turning into a personal friend because they are around 24 hours a day and often times are asked to live at the residence of the celebrity to provide protection 7 days a week. In other cases the bodyguard can be hired to just show up when the celebrity is leaving their home and is anticipating a crowd at an event he or she is going to.
There is one thing to remember if you ever are in need of a bodyguard. Shop around and don't settle for the first agency you come in contact with unless you received a strong recommendation. Find out what the credentials are of each agency and find out what the skill set and background is of each bodyguard. Obviously, you don't want a bodyguard with a criminal record. You also don't want to look for a bodyguard with just a couple of years of experience. If the bodyguard you are hiring has a history of altercations then take that as a warning sign. The best bodyguards are the ones that will know what to do when a situation arises and are the best at diffusing a situation before it escalates and can stop something from happening just because of their physical presence.
